If you live in one of the many areas of the US that is suffering from freezing temperatures you just might be in the mood for an escape to the balmy tropics. And, should your tastes run more to Champagne than beer, have we got the place for you.

Set on an idyllic strip of land between a white sand beach and tropical jungle, the newly-opened Mukan Resort is the first luxury eco-resort in Mexico’s Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Slip off those stilettos and winter suits and tip-toe through a soft sandy shoreline framed by stately on the country's Caribbean coast just south of the bustling, tourist-centric town of Tulum.

Your Mukan adventure starts  at the entrance of the biosphere where you  are whisked away by boat on a private 45-minute voyage through dense mangrove forests before reaching the resort’s private dock. Carved through the jungle of this pristine islet, the intimate retreat features just four standalone beachfront bungalows and a main villa housing five guest suites, each with its own private terrace.

The property is lined with sandy paths that lead to  a thatched-roof gourmet restaurant, oceanfront spa facility, alfresco cigar bar, and comfy  canopy beds placed on the beach with hammocks strung on the trees throughout the resort.  The surrounding biosphere is one of Mexico’s largest protected areas with lush green forests, pristine wetlands, lagoons, extensive mangrove stands, cenotes, forested islets, sandy beaches as well as the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The reserve is home to many species of animals such as jaguars, migratory birds, marine turtles, colorful fish species and more. Named by the ancient Maya inhabitants, Sian Ka’an translates to “origin of the sky” and was inspired by the area’s natural beauty. Furthermore, the name Mukan represents a metaphor for the abundance of life and beauty found within the Sian Ka’an. Derived from the Mayan word ‘Xmucane’, Mukan represents the creator of everything we see surrounding the property.

Naturally one would expect fine dining at a luxury resort and at Mukan, we hear, that the chef will fix you personalized meals. You don't even need to read  a menu. The fare includes regional and international-inspired dishes accented by locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients.

Breakfasts begin in your room with coffee and fresh coconuts before you head to the dining area. Lunch and dinner is a delight as  the culinary team creates memorable dining experiences.

Guests get use of kayaks, paddle boards, snorkeling equipment, bicycles and yoga mats, and can arrange off-site excursions through the concierge such as canoeing through the meandering mangroves, diving through the crystalline waters of the Yucatan’s famed cenotes, casting a line in the world-class fly fishing lagoons and more. Ideal for a romantic escape, quality time with friends and family, weddings, executive conferences or personalized wellness retreats, Mukan offers something for everyone.

Rates begin at $420 USD per night, based on double occupancy.  For more about nearby Tulum  watch this video:
