Celebrity chef Michael Mina to open second eatery in Hawaii

One of my favorite mainland chefs Michael Mina, is bringing his culinary talents to Waikiki. On May 19 the creative restaurateur is opening The Street, A Michael Mina Social House- on Oahu- a gourmet gathering place and a multi-concept collaboration between a roster of talented chefs. The 6,900-square foot  venue is designed as a culinary journey for friends and families to gather for casual meals or festive celebrations to savor everything from barbecue to beer and pizza to poke, The Street will house actually 13 different restaurant concepts, each presenting a delicious menu driven by the chefs’ passion for the foods they love to cook and eat.

“In my childhood home, meals were an event. Everything overflowed – the food, the guests and the conversation. Our table was the heart of the family,” said Mina. “I established The Street to capture that sense of excitement and celebration. It’s one giant overflowing table where our family of masterful chefs create innovative cuisine with serious crave appeal.”

Unique to Mina’s new eatery is The Street Party Pass, a moveable feast that allows patrons to create their own culinary adventure.  The Street Party Pass provides a convenient, value-driven way for diners to enjoy a variety of dishes for $37, exclusively available to Party Pass holders. With purchase comes seven items of each holders choosing from any of the restaurant stalls, available for redemption within a 30 day period.

Reflecting a global perspective while also elevating Hawai‘i’s wholesome and local fare, the participating chefs and their restaurant concepts are:

  • ·         Michael Mina of Little Lafa, a Mediterranean kitchen with cuisine from Mina’s Middle Eastern upbringing.
  • ·         Adam Sobel of Adam’s Nana Lu, an eatery serving up soulful and authentic Italian food from Sobel’s childhood, including recipes made with love from his grandmother, Nana Lu, in her Italian kitchen.
  • ·         Chef and author, Ayesha Curry is behind International Smoke, serving lighter takes on barbecue dishes inspired by exotic places and “down home” smoke pits.
  • ·         Craig Min of LAMILL Coffee, an artisanal coffee bar with handpicked ingredients.
  • ·         David Varley of Maui Onion Burger, a chef-driven, made-with-aloha cool and casual burger joint.
  • ·         Gerald Chin of Kai Poke, a creative and contemporary interpretation of locally sourced seafood combined with bold flavors.
  • ·         Ken Tominaga of The Ramen Bar, a noodle stand reflective of Tokyo’s popular cuisine with a modern twist.
  • ·         O‘ahu-born and raised Michelle Karr-Ueoka of Aloha Ice, an elevated dessert bar with fresh spins on shave ice and other sweet treats.

Additional restaurant concepts  include: Beer, a beer garden and wine bar featuring an assortment of locally brewed Hawaiian beers; Indie Girl, a wellness bar with smoothies, island fresh juices and kombucha on tap curated in part by local health guru Sam Custin of Haleiwa Bowls; The Myna Bird, a tiki bar paying homage to Don the Beachcomber and his squawking bird; Mindful Greens, a concept rooted in thoughtful, healthy eating; and The Street Chocolate Bar, a boutique chocolate shop showcasing Hawai‘i-made chocolates.

The Street will be open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night making it the perfect destination for any occasion any day of the week. Select vendors will have extended hours for late night happenings such as DJ sets and reverse happy hours.

“The Street will feature an approachable way to experience incredibly diverse, fine-dining caliber cuisine from a variety of talented chefs.  It is very much inspired by the local community and the idea of bringing people together through the universal language of great food, great people and fun times,” said Mina. “The atmosphere will be upbeat and energetic and reflective of the Hawaiian lifestyle.”

The restaurant is located at 2330 Kalâkaua Ave., on the ground floor of the International Market Place. Valet, self-parking and parking validation is available. The Street will join MINA Group’s contemporary American steakhouse, STRIPSTEAK Waikiki, located on the Market Place’s Third Floor Grand Lânai. The Street Honolulu is the first of its kind, while a second one will open in Los Angeles’ Beverly Center in 2018.

TCL Chinese Theatre celebrates 90th Anniversary in typical Hollywood style

Premier presentation of the newly restored 1934 Cecil B. DeMille's  Cleopatra, kicks off event

Patti Pietchmann reporting

Hooray, horoay it's soon to be the First of May and on that day Hollywood Heritage, the TCL Chinese Theatre, NBCUniversal and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are helping to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the opening of one of the nation’s most iconic landmarks, The TCL Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd., with the premier presentation of the newly restored 1934 Cecil B. DeMille film, Cleopatra.

Th event will kick  off the organization’s National Historic Preservation Month activities.
DeMille’s version of the Cleopatra story with Claudette Colbert as the legendary siren of the Nile was a critical and financial success for Paramount. In addition, Cleopatra received several Academy Award nominations and was given the Best Cinematography award. The film is noted for its magnificent Art Deco-inspired sets.

The TCL Chinese Theatre,  which was designed by the celebrated architectural firm of Meyer and Holler, was built in 1927 for legendary promoter Sid Grauman and was the second of his movie palaces on Hollywood Boulevard. The theatre is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument. For nine decades, the owners of the theatre have shown remarkable stewardship of the historic features while carefully updating the viewing experience to IMAX.

The mission of Hollywood Heritage, a 501(c) 3 public benefit corporation celebrating over three decades of service, is to educate the public about the role of the early film industry and its pioneers in shaping Hollywood history and to preserve the historic built environment in Hollywood. There is no better way to illustrate the organization’s mission than with the presentation of a restored film in a magnificently preserved theatre. MTV awards nominees and media score super swag bags at Secretroomevents

MTV awards nominees and media treated gifts galore

By Patti Pietschmann

The young and restless worked the room loading gift bags with the newest and hottest hair and beauty products, gifts for children (such as Jessica Simpson shoes),
gorgeous handcrafted fine fiber necklace from JA Designer Collections, wearable temperature monitors for babies and adults from Temp Traq, t-shirts, trips (not available for press), fine jewelry by Durrani (MTVers scored the best stuff, but I like my compass necklace),teeth whitening certificates from
Kelly Smile Dentistry, lots of  fine hair and skincare products and more.
It was another super swag event staged by the talented team at secretroomevents.com.

The Caribbean-theme outdoor affair took place on a terrace at the chic hotel on a nice, sunny LA day. Of course the press and paparazzi where there but you could pretty much tell the talent from the rest by the skimpy, ski-showing outfits and slim and perky figures.

Where to get the best Branzino in Los Angeles it's a no brainer

Il Piccolino in West Hollywood of course

By Patti Pietschmann

This is my Branzino from lunch yesterday at this Los Angeles meets Italy meets New York-style restaurant where celebrities go to dine and not be seen and the food is always the freshest, finest and most creatively prepared.
Best friends enjoying a luscious lunch at Il Piccolino

Old world risotto with truffles a bonus from the chef and Silvio

Il Piccolino, 350 N Robertson Blvd, West Hollywood, Phone(310) 659-2220
"We firmly believe in using locally grown, organic and sustainable produce
whenever possible. Our beef is natural grass-fed, our Jidori Farms chicken is
certified organic, and our seafood comes in fresh every morning from around
the world. We cook only with extra virgin olive oil, 10-year aged balsamic
vinegar, natural sea salt and imported Grana Padano aged at least 18
months. Our bread, is guaranteed 100% vegan and our salad dressings are
made in-house.
Il Piccolino is a small restaurant and our food is always fresh since we only
buy quantities appropriate for each day, so it is possible that on occasion we
may run out of certain products at night.
Our renowned pesto sauce is made fresh, daily from an original Genovese
recipe. Our Tarte Tatin and Chocolate Mousse are also made in-house daily,
and like all our dishes, are created carefully following our traditional family
recipes. We are very proud and happy to share all of our delicious dishes
with you. "

Falcon Theatre ends season with brilliant laugh a minute comedy

‘The Complete History of Comedy (abridged)’ is a must see in these trying times

By Patti Pietschmann

If Garry Marshall was still alive he would be so pleased with the last seasonal production at the Falcon Theatre which he co-founded in 1970 with his daughter Kathleen Marshall LaGambina. It was a much-needed comic relief in these trying times.  Brilliantly cast and directed ‘The Complete History of Comedy (abridged)’ takes you on a journey of the genre from  Aristophanes, Charlie Chaplin, Shakespeare,  the Daily Show and even Jesus Christ with lots of contemporary political humor and  comedy dell arte interspersed.

The play opens with the voice of the late, great Johnny Carson (not sure real or impersonated) delivering one of his memorable monologues.  From there a trio of talented thespians floors us with antics, jokes, audience participation pranks and foibles. There a musical background of theme songs from shows such as The Simpsons, Cheers, The Jeffersons, Curb Your Enthusiasm and other funny TV series and a hilarious bit putting songs from The Supremes into the act.
It’s cute, entertaining, fast-paced and recommended for anyone who needs relief from the daily comedy show taking place in today’s White House.

Meet the cast:

Zehra Fazal Theatre: Bars and Measures (Theatre @ Boston Court), Othello (Folger Shakespeare Library), The Engine of Our Ruin (Victory Theater Center), Kite on the Wind: A Tale of Pakistan (Kennedy Center), That Face (Studio Theatre), Opera Meets Improv Series (Groundlings/LAOpera), and the tour of her musical Headscarf and the Angry Bitch, which played at the DC Fringe Festival (WON: Best Solo Show), NYC's Cherry Lane Theatre, Hollywood, Indianapolis and Toronto Fringe. Education: BA, Wellesley College. Zehra can be heard in video games including Final Fantasy XV, Titanfall 2, and Uncharted 4, and on TV in Comedy Central's Legends of Chamberlain Heights, and Marvel's Daredevil.

Marc Ginsburg was last seen playing 18(!) crazy characters in The Real Housewives of Toluca Lake: The Musical! Favorite roles include ‘Che’ (Evita), ‘Aaron’ (First Date - Best Actor Ovation Nomination), ‘Lord Farquaad’ (Shrek), ‘Leo Bloom’ (The PRESS RELEASE: The Complete History of Comedy (abridged) 3 of 3 Producers), and countless others.
