Guess where the most expensive hotels in Florida are

We're talking room rates of $1,395 a night

By Patti Pietchmann

Bet you'd never guess that the most expensive hotels in the Sunshine State are in the Florida Keys. That's what a new survey conducted by Miamihotels.org has discovered by comparing  luxury hotels based on their cheapest available rate for a double room during the month of February 2017. That timeframe was chosen because it represents the high season for most Florida destinations.
Little Palm Island Resort and Spa leads the pack with a price of $1,395. We stayed there years ago and it's pretty spiffy, but I'm not sure if it's worth quite that much. however it is a perfect celebrity hangout for those who prefer privacy since it's situated on a remote island off Little Torch Key. The next pricey property is The Moorings Villa & Spa  with rates of $1,287 that sits in Islamorada. And the third top tab is at the Sunset Key Cottages in Key West with a minimum overnight rate of $1,035.
The Setai ranks as the priciest luxury hotel in Miami Beach. Rooms there begin at $992 nightly. The most expensive  hotel in southwest Florida is the Ritz Carlton in Naples where a room costs $933 for the night.
If you enjoy luxury and can afford the tab here are a few more high-priced Florida spreads;
Fisher Island Resort $1,030; The St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort $998; Faena Hotel Miami Beach $839; The Breakers Palm Beach $774 (where the rich and famous frolic) and the Boca Beach Club in Boca Raton (see photos below), which is well known for its golf course and the luminaries who play there with rates starting at

February is Grapefruit month celebrate with a tasty toast

Make a negroni or just add vodka with fizzy Q Grapefruit
By Patti Pietschmann

Did you know that February is National Grapefruit Month?  I  wasn't aware until a press release came today via email.  I just had half a grapefruit for breakfast this morning. Love the juicy citrus. I also enjoy it with vodka which is called a Salty  Dog. But there are other adult drinks you can make with it using  Q Grapefruit --a carbonated beverage that embraces the fruit's various hints of tart and organic sweetness with the help of some organic sugar cane.

Q Grapefruit is one of the carbonated cocktail mixers, offered by Q Drinks founded by entrepreneur and cocktail enthusiast, Jordan Silbert. Each Q Drink flavor is created with natural ingredients, more fizz and less sugar.  Here are a few recipes, these days we all need a good drink:

Icelandic Paloma

2 parts Reyka Vodka
½ part Ancho Reyes Chile Liqueur
1 part Q Grapefruit Juice
½ part Simple Syrup
¼ part Lime Juice

Build the cocktail over ice, shake, and serve in a Collins glass. Created by Reyka Brand Ambassador Trevor Schneider.

Sparkling Grapefruit Negroni

4 parts Q Grapefruit
1 ½ parts Campari
1 ½ parts Premium Gin

Combine Campari and Gin over good ice in a cocktail shaker and shake until cold. Strain into a flute and top with Q Grapefruit. Garnish with a grapefruit wedge or peel.

The Saluki
2 parts Reyka Vodka
6 parts Q Grapefruit
Wedge of Lime
Salt for rim of glass

Rim a highball glass with salt and fill it with ice.  Pour in the vodka, top with the Q Grapefruit and garnish with the lime.

Let me count the ways:  great all-day long happy hour at the bustling bar with top barkeeps pouring stiff drinks and generous glasses of wine and waiters bringing plates of delicious half-priced dishes. Of course you can always sit on the patio or at a table, but my husband Richard and I and our friends prefer the friendly bar.

The new Georgie at Montage Beverly Hills is just peachy keen

The new light and airy room provides perfect showcase for Chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s creations
By Patti Pietschmann with photos by Richard Pietschmann
Dining at the up chic Montage Beverly Hills is always a treat with the eclectic assortment of celebrity eye candy, discerning foodies, locals and of course tourists staying at the posh hotel along with consistently fine cuisine no matter who’s running the kitchen.  And the newish  (circa June 2016) Georgie is no exception, it’s stylish, airy and casually chic with white walls, wood floors and  contemporary furnishings.  It is also under the guidance of Chef/restaurateur Geoffrey  Zakarian who is recognized for his personally crafted sophisticated culinary style.

Zakarian is owner of The Lambs Club and The National in the heart of midtown Manhattan, as well as The National in Greenwich, Connecticut, Zakarian where his classical culinary training and his eye for design are well showcased.  He also oversees the food and beverage program at The Water Club at Borgata in Atlantic City and The Plaza where he re-launched The Palm Court.

Last June Chef took his toque to Beverly Hills to create Georgie and the Garden Bar at the Montage. We dined at the later recently and thoroughly enjoyed the experience along with our wait person Moe who was efficient and friendly.  We started with a martini for Richard and Merlot for me along with two good appetizer choices, a humachi crudo and tuna tartar (which could have been a little spicier for my tastes but still well received by my taste buds).
My Dover Sole
Richard's King salmon

Me in our booth (couples should be sure to request one)

My entrée was a delicate and delicious Dover Sole that goes for a stiff $59 (but this is Montage) while Richard went for grilled Ora King salmon ($49). For dessert we ordered a platter of cookies that were sinfully tasty but we resisted eating them all and had a few boxed up to take home.

The clientele proved pretty much the usual suspects plus a nanny with her charges who seemed to eat and run, a suspiciously music industry dude in t-shirt and jeans, an Asian couple that were most likely staying at the hotel and a few entertainment business types that looked like they were discussing scripts and movies. The bar, which is located at the entry to the restaurant, was fairly charged up.
The Montage is such a lovely, gracious hotel and as I said always a pleasure to go for a meal (there’s a great rooftop spot that’s ideal for lunch in warm weather) and an exclusive bar hidden above Georgie called 16 pounds that presents a theatrical tippling experience with outrageously creative snacks such as crispy bacon and cheddar cheese and more.

Georgie serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.  A few  popular dinner selections include Kabocha squash soup; grilled Spanish octopus; shrimp dumplings; lamb tartare for starters and grilled short rib; dry aged Creekstone Farms NY strip; Black Cod; spaghetti with veal meatballs and a pumpkin cappelletti. There are also side dishes and salads and of course decadent desserts. Full menus can be found on the web site. A few highlights

Montage is located at 225 North Canon Drive in the heart of bodacious Beverly Hills.

Wi-Fi, live TV and movies for all customers on every plane.”
 Gate-to-Gate Connectivity
